Pope Makes New Appeal For Mideast Peace

Pope Benedict XVI made a new appeal for peace in the Middle East on Sunday, calling for an immediate cease-fire.

"Faced with the bitter consideration that calls for an immediate cease-fire in that torn region have remained unheeded, I feel the urgency to renew my pressing appeal to the effect, asking everybody to give their effective contribution to building a just and lasting peace," the pope said.

Benedict made the remarks during the Sunday prayer from his summer residence of Castel Gandolfo, a hill town south of Rome.
